What the bistro is to Parisians is the steakhouse to New Yorkers. When it comes to steak my husband can call himself an expert. Whenever we were traveling he would do research beforehand and drag me to a good steak restaurant in town. For him this has always been a part of sightseeing. Good for him that we live in The City…

Below are our current top five for NYC knowing that there are more to discover. You can not go wrong with any of these steak restaurants!

General advice: book 2-3 weeks in advance, especially for Thursday – Sunday evenings.

American Cut (Tribeca)
363 Greenwich St, NY 10013
A good mix of old school and sleek interior with beautiful chandeliers on the ceiling. This restaurant owned by the celebrity chef Marc Forgione is a solid option. Their pastrami flavored steak is worth a try. Great steak restaurant loved by business people which is also famous for their burger.

Keens Steakhouse (Midtown)
72W 36th, NY 10018
I would call this restaurant a steakhouse institution. Established 1885, Keens is the oldest Steakhouse in NYC with very old school charm and it owns the largest collection of churchwarden pipes in the world. Vintage rooms with an antique bar offering a great selection of single malts. Excellent food and top notch service, there is no question why this restaurant is still around.

Peter Luger (Williamsburg, Brooklyn)
178 Broadway, Brooklyn
No list of top steak restaurant without Peter Luger. “The Original Master of Blood and Butter” called by the New York Times and I also agree with New York Times that the rooms recall a Bavarian beer Hall. An institution founded in 1887 that lives up to the hype and high expectations. However be comfortable with somewhat rough waiters and that you need to bring (a lot of) cash. No credit cards.

Porter House (Columbus Circle)
10 Columbus Circle, NY 10019
For me the most family/kids friendly out of these top 5. A very spacious steakhouse with a good selection of seafood apart from steak.  If you are lucky you might get one of tables over looking Central Park.
Reservation: 1-2 weeks lead time

Wolfgang’s Steakhouse (Park Avenue)
4 Park Ave. NY 10016
This excellent restaurant is owned by Wolfgang Zwiener, the former headwaiter of Peter Luger for 4 decades. Out of the 3 locations in The City, our favorite is the one on Park Avenue. For me this place would be the classic prototypical NYC steakhouse with mahogany paneling and arched ceilings. My husband’s favorite!
